Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979, the MBSR course is considered the gold standard of research-based mindfulness training programs. Mindfulness is an inherent human capacity that can be developed and strengthened. The course consists of 9 sessions plus an orientation session and offers a systematic method of cultivating mental clarity, well-being, and insight through guided practices, gentle mindful stretching, self-inquiry techniques, mindful listening practice, and group dialogue. Students will explore mind/body strategies aimed at enhancing self-awareness and resilience to manage the stress of daily living. Mindfulness training has been utilized as a highly successful adjunct treatment for individuals who deal with illness and chronic pain as well as anxious mood states.
